MEDIATE BIRDIES LAST TWO HOLES TO WIN SANFORD INTERNATIONAL
Rocco Mediate birdied Nos. 17 and 18 and won the Sanford International when 36-hole co-leader Ken Duke double bogeyed the 18th hole at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mediate’s birdie-birdie finish capped a 6-under 64, tied for his best final-round score on PGA TOUR Champions, and secured his first victory since the 2016 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.
Duke started Sunday’s final round as a leader/co-leader for the first time in 488 career starts in PGA TOUR-sanctioned events. With Mediate in the clubhouse at 9-under, Duke evened the score with a birdie on the par-5 16th. Needing to par No. 18 to force a playoff, Duke missed the fairway off the tee and needed three more shots to reach the putting surface. Two putts led to a double bogey and a T2 finish with Bob Estes and Colin Montgomerie.
